David & Ed Mirvish and Peter Sever are delighted to present an extraordinary new dance musical having its World Premiere as part of the inaugural Luminato festival, VIDA! will be performed from June 1, 2007 at the historic Royal Alexandra Theatre. The limited engagement has now been extended until June 17, 2007.Currently being created in Havana by many of Cuba’s finest theatrical and musical talents, VIDA! will star Lizt Alfonso’s Danza Cuba, an internationally recognized troupe of 25 female dancers, described by the New York Times as "celebratory spirits stamping and clacking as one.” Starring as Vida will be Omara Portuondo, Cuba’s premier vocalist and one of the stars of the Buena Vista Social Club.In total, more than 40 brilliant Cuban artists – dancers, singers and musicians – will perform in VIDA!



Set in Cuba, VIDA! tells the story of one woman’s life as it spans the century. This is a story of courage, strength, joy and loss. By extension, it is the story of a nation, exploring Cuba’s richly vivid social history in the 20th century. Vida is a much-loved woman, teacher and writer. She is a woman who has seen much and lived life with passion and joy. Today, she is given the opportunity to pass on to her legacy – the story of her life – to her beloved granddaughter, Alma.Together, Vida and Alma revisit memories of Vida’s life through the decades, as conjured by a mysterious stranger…
